Zimbabwe

Country Profile
Most known for the legendary Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe has a truly spectacular variety of natural assets from ancient cities to pristine wilderness areas. Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and one of the finest elephant conservation areas in Africa with an estimation of up 28 000 elephants. This is vast wilderness area of Kalahari sands, saltpans, acacia scrub, vleis and grassy plains. The west of the park has black cotton soils and mopani woodlands. This area supports one of Africa’s widest diversities of wildlife and over 400 species of birds, providing an exceptional game viewing experience. To the north of the country, the remote Mana Pools National Park on the banks of the Zambezi is a designated World Heritage site. Wild and remote, the park supports large wildlife concentrations and numerous species of bird life. A guided canoe safari down-river is an unforgettable experience as you weave your way past territorial hippos and drift slowly as elephant herds swim across the river in front of you. Almost 40% of Mana Pools is a designated wilderness area that is set aside for walking safaris only allowing for up close encounters with wildlife on foot. Located in a region packed full of history, the bewitching Matopos National Park in the south-western part of the country combines history, scenery and wildlife. Famous as the burial place of the British Imperialist Cecil John Rhodes, who described his burial site as the “World’s View”, the park enjoys a spectacular landscape of balancing granite rocks. Bushman rock art dating back several hundred years can be seen in caves throughout the park. The hills are now home to the country’s largest population of white rhino. Formed by the continent’s third largest dam built in the 1950’s, Lake Kariba is famous for its water activities and fishing. There is also plenty of wildlife on the banks of the lake, including buffalo and elephant, and the bird life is prolific. The bleached trunks and branches of the dead trees drowned by the dam make a stunning foreground to amazing sunsets. Matusadonha National Park, on the shore of the lake is a beautiful park with a wide variety of wildlife, including one of the last wild populations of the endangered black rhinoceros. The park is bordered by the Zambezi Escarpment, providing a scenic combination of flat plains and rugged mountain country creating great hiking terrain. Perhaps Zimbabwe’s most scenic park, however, is Chizarira National Park, which lies astride the Zambezi Escarpment. Highly remote, Chizarira is the least visited of Zimbabwe’s parks and facilities are limited. For many the silence and isolation are part of the attraction of this stunning location, with high escarpment views, green gorges, natural springs, dense woodlands and floodplains. The park is rich in wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. The rugged and impressive Gonarezhou National Park is a region of baobabs, scrublands, sandy rivers and sandstone cliffs. The second African Peace Parks project is aiming to join Gonarezhou with South Africa’s Kruger National Park and the Limpopo National Park of Mozambique, leaving the animals with no political boundaries. Despite being in the limelight too often in recent times, Zimbabwe remains a prime safari destination with a very high safety record. A further attraction is that the country probably offers the best value safaris in Africa at present. Zimbabwe’s guides, who have a well-deserved reputation for being the most highly trained and qualified on the African continent, complement luxurious lodges and bush camps in prime game-viewing locations. Hospitable and friendly people guarantee you a warm welcome to this breath-taking country.

Mana Canoeing & Walking Trail with Tailormade Safaris
This is a great way to enjoy the wildlife of the park! At your pace, you will canoe down the mighty Zambezi River, the 4th largest river in Africa on a 3 night canoe mobile safari. This is an adventure of a lifetime, an experience unlike any other. The paddling is easy and no canoe experience is necessary. You will canoe down the Zambezi River with a full back-up team who will set up the camps well ahead of you for the different night spots. In total you will probably do about 8 hours of light paddling in a steady current. During the three days you will not be going through any rapids. The whole trip will be along Mana Pools shore line covering a distance of about 70 kilometres and you’ll enjoy the viewing of wild life in the style of a canoe which is usually combined with walking and exploring the Mana Pools wilderness areas off the beaten track. Accommodation at your private camps consists of dome tents that can sleep 2 guests in comfortable beds with en-suite shower and loo. Along the banks of the river, nights are characterised by the echoes of grunting hippos, calls of nocturnal bird life and very often a lion roar can be heard in the distance followed by nervous alarm calls. Dining is under the stars and this gives a genuine African meaning to the expression “eating out”. This highly rewarding experience is described by many a traveller as the best adventure safari in Africa!

Chitake Tented Camp With Tailormade Safaris
The scenery around Chitake springs is very different with river beds and cliffs offering great opportunity to track and observe animals coming to quench their thirst. Chitake Springs is renowned during the dry months of the year, when lions are commonly observed waiting for their prey to come and quench their thirst as it is the only fresh water for grazers coming down from the escarpment going to the Zambezi River. Activities will be both on foot and by vehicle. You will stay in the comfort of large dome tents with en-suite shower and toilet at this exclusive campsite with your own private guide. Our tented adventures are fully backed up by a crew of 3-4 staff (depending on the area and number in party) who will take care of the movement, setup and breakdown of the camp, cooking, waiting and making up the tents ensuring that guests make the most of the day and the night with their safari commitments and rest. After breakfast this morning you will be transferred by road to Hwange National Park Main Camp (about 2 ½ hours). To Hwange National Park, the road meanders through beautiful rural sceneries where you can witness the traditional lifestyle of the people and even stop to take some pictures of the most beautiful huts and share a laugh with these welcoming tribes. This is a rare opportunity on safari as usually guests travel through national parks only, where there are little or no human settlements. En route you will stop at the Wild Dog Rehabilitation Centre for a free visit. Once at Hwange Main Camp you will be met by a camp vehicle for a leisurely drive of about two hours to the camp where you will enjoy a four night stay.

After your morning activity, you will fly to Mana Pools National Park. After a short game drive you will arrive at your private tented camp located on the river’s edge which will be your home for the next three nights. Mana Pools National Park is an area that has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO as the number of visitors to the park is strictly controlled. In Mana Pools the Zambezi River meanders through a wide valley, repeatedly splaying out into islands, channels and sandbanks, with escarpments rising dramatically on either side. Along the old banks of the river are the Pools, which give Mana its name – depressions filled with water in abandoned river channels. Chine and Long Pool hold water throughout the year and attract large animal concentrations in the dry season. A typical day will start with an early wake-up at sunrise, after which you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a light breakfast. You then hop into the open safari vehicle and venture in the direction of whatever sounds have been heard in the night. After a short while on the road you are likely to encounter the plains animals such as impala, waterbuck, and eland. These animals are so abundant that they are often taken for granted, so after a few pictures have been taken it is off to more exciting things. The roads often indicate who has been around during the night – a kind of early morning newspaper. Once suitable tracks have been found it’s time to get out and track on foot – most likely lion, elephant or buffalo. Animals are approached to a safe distance and this will depend on the terrain, wind direction and species. Your camp offers the comfort of big Meru tents with en-suite shower and toilet and is completely private making this safari very flexible. If you would like to safari for the whole day it will be a pleasure for the team although generally wildlife activities take place in the morning and in the afternoon, with time for brunch and a siesta in camp during the hot hours of the day.
