By the Water’s Edge – 11 days/10 nights
3 nights Little Makalolo, Hwange National Park
2 nights Ruckomechi Camp
3 nights Mana Canoe Trail
2 nights Victoria Falls Hotel
Climate and temperatures in Africa can be very harsh, especially
in the drier months when most of the wildlife have to risk their
lives for a drink at the local waterhole and on the other hand
the predators make it a way of life to wait for their thirsty,
highly concentrated and vulnerable enemies. Follow the interactions
of predators and their prey from the land of many, Hwange national
park to the floodpains of the Lower Zambezi River in Mana Pools
National Park; granted world heritage site status for its low impact
model. Game viewing on this diverse journey is on foot, in viewing
hides, canoes, flat bottom pontoon boats and open game drive vehicles
Journey in Detail
Guests arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport where you
are met and transferred to Little Makalolo in just under and hour
on a light aircraft. Half an hour game drive will have the party
in the comfort of Little Makalolo Camp.
Little Makalolo Camp, Hwange National Park - 3 nights
This part is mainly to focus on the concentrations and diversity
of wildlife that this park has to offer. In this area activities
are mainly on open game drive vehicles, on foot and from the famous
log pile hide. Hosting 12 guests in 6 tents overlooking a very
active waterhole that is a haven for wildlife both day and night,
this camp is amongst the most exciting of camps in Africa. Hwange
National Park boasts the second largest diversity of wildlife in
Africa and is known as the numbers park of Southern Africa for
its large concentrations of wildlife. The endangered black and
white rhinoceros, large herds of elephant, buffalo and antelope
and numerous predators including brown hyena, leopard and lion
are resident in Hwange. After a 3 night stay guests are transferred
by light aircraft to Ruckomechi Camp in Mana Pools National Park.
Ruckomechi Camp, Mana Pools National Park - 2 nights
Situated along the banks of the river, commanding great views of
the Zambezi Escarpment, this is an area well known for its great
variety of wildlife and breathtaking scenery, which can be enjoyed
on foot, by vehicle or on a motorised pontoon boat. Along the vast
alluvial floodplains of the Zambezi River wild animals interact
in the dry river beds, open grassland and acacia forests that characterise
the Ruckomechi concession. A breeding herd of elephants often makes
itself at home in the camp feeding on the plentiful acacia pods
during the dry months. Comprising 9 tents, all facing the river
creates memorable sunsets and evenings. From Ruckomechi Camp guests
will begin their 3 night/4 day adventure.
Mana Pools
Canoe Trail, Mana Pools Shoreline - 3 nights
The journey down the river along the Mana Pools shoreline in 18foot
Canadian canoes, is set to be the highlight of the trip. Spending
a lot of time on foot guests have the opportunity of enjoying the
highly thrilling experience of tracking wildlife in an area with
high concentrations of the relaxed herds, prides and packs of wildlife.
This mixed with the adventure of canoeing past large pods of hippos
on the mighty Zambezi River, surrounded by breathtaking scenery
and in the company of a knowledgeable guide sets one up for a truly
life changing experience. Camping in a different area every day,
nights are characterised by the echoes of grunting hippos, calls
of nocturnal birdlife and very often a lion roar can be heard in
the distance followed by nervous alarm calls. Dining is under the
stars and this gives a genuine African meaning to the expression “eating
out”. This highly rewarding journey is described by many
a traveller as the best adventure safari in Africa. Find out why…
