Humphrey Gumpo
Humphrey was born in the small lake town of Kariba in Zimbabwe. As
a boy he had no choice but to learn the water and the wild at a very
young age, participating in various wildlife conservation and survival
courses at Primary School. Humphrey was sent to boarding High School
at age 12 to not only further his education but build character.
Soon after schooling he decided he wanted to follow his dreams in
wildlife conservation and safari guiding and passed his Learner Guides
exams in 1997. He then joined Fothergill Island safari Lodge and
was enrolled on an intensive guide-training course in 1998. This
saw Humphrey work in Matusadonha, Mana Pools and Gona Re Zhou National
Parks in Zimbabwe.
At the beginning of 2000 he joined a renowned operator at Ruckomechi
Camp, then Matusadonha Water Wilderness. Working on the water saw
Humphrey pursue his River Guiding Licence, which he was awarded in
October 2000. During his time as a learner he participated in problem
animal control and was attached to a few hunting operations to gain
experience in Big Game Hunting in preparation for his walking licence.
Humphrey qualified as a Zimbabwe Professional guide at the end of
2001 based at Chikwenya camp and having both the river and the walking
qualification, was destined for the river. In July 2002 he took over
the management and guiding of the Mana Pools Canoeing and Walking
Safari. During his off-season he would take time to guide and learn
about other areas including guiding and helping with a Turtle Research
programme at Rocktail Bay on the Northern Maputaland Coastline of
South Africa at the same time learning about marine life.
In 2006 he went to the Kafue National Park in Zambia to broaden his
view of the Southern African region and experience a different culture.
He then set off to gain Botswana experience by working in the Selinda
area of the Linyanti in 2007 while taking time to lead private guided
safaris into areas of the Okavango, the Moremi and the deserts of
Botswana. To date Humphrey shares his passion for wildlife with visitors
from all corners of the world and is developing his knowledge and
skill in the art of filming and photography with a view of enhancing
his guest’s safari experiences by having a photographic eye
and knowledge himself.
